  6. The Last Great Shipwreck

    The Yorkshire coast has been notorious for shipwrecks. A map with a pin showing the sites of all the shipwrecks down the ages would resemble a pincushion! Many of the wrecks, particularly in the early days, were a result of poorly maintained vessels or bad seamanship. But war and weather have also played their part.
  7. Man-made Cliffs

    Take a stroll along the shore to the north east of Skinningrove and you will pass the only stretch of sand dunes to be found on the coast between Saltburn and the Humber Estuary. The dunes at Skinningrove provide a differing wildlife habitat to the rest of the rocky coast and are also backed by some very unusual cliffs!

  8. England's First Poet

    Although the present abbey at Whitby dates from 1078 it is close to the site of an earlier abbey founded by Abbess Hilda in 657. It was here that a shy, middle aged farm worker named Caedmon became the creator of English sacred song and the country's first poet.
