Groningen

On the border with Friesland the route runs along the dike which changed the Lauwerszee into the Lauwersmeer in 1969. This lake is part nature reserve, part military exercise area.

From Lauwersoog you can take the ferry to the interesting car-free island of Schiermonnikoog. The landscape of the province of Groningen is similar to that of Friesland: sparsely populated and there are lonely polders with large farms. The route passes through several lovely villages such as Pieterburen, where you may visit the famous seal sanctuary. The most important harbour in this area is Delfzijl.
